Sarah, Brava!

Posted on: October 3, 2008

Update: An enlightened and empathic discussion of Sarah Palin and the v.p. debate can be heard on internet radio show, introductory link from us here.
By most accounts and by any large number of measures, it was a classic, vintage, natural  Sarah who showed up to debate last night!

We urged here in the previous post, that she should just let be. Let Sarah be Sarah, we urged. And, sure enough there she was, herself. Full of folksy, comfy, kitchen table talk, non-wonky commonsense assertiveness, completely positive, forward looking, non-negative, non-whiny good-news cheerfulness.

Sarah did all she had to do, to keep her supporters happy, to hearten those inclined toward her, and  to continue to bother the bejeebus out of the left wing. In the vein of talkshow jargon, Sarah Palin, just did not exceed expectations, she nailed it!  Sarah did great!!

Biden’s points were a bit too harpy, constantly lamentations  and negative. Though generally cordial and gracious, even courtly in manner, his talking points were often and repeatedly negation. Not, not, not, is all I heard often. And then, of course, there was the big Joe Biden lie about Obama never claiming that he would meet unconditionally with some tyrants. Truth is Obama did say, was proud of it, and was attacked by Biden in the primaries. Here:

Sarah was energetic, drove all her points home without filling the air with a lot Dukakis-style minutae. She made her case for her team. She did not fumble, or make gaffes, she committed no blunders and compared to Biden’s “vast experience” held her own very well. Sarah comforted and confirmed the hearts and minds of millions of her fans. No one will give up on Sarah now, not after her performance in the debate tonight!

Just like in some of her other public pronouncements, so in this debate, Sarah got the pronunciation of the names of foreign leaders correct. Ahmadinejad, was perfectly well pronounced. This may seem small, but in diplomatic and academic cricles, being able to say these names can be almost as significant or even indicative of a good grasp of the situations these leaders pose. Sarah showed a gift for names!

….few could have expected as vibrant and tactically clever a performance as the one Sarah Palin turned in Thursday night. David Brooks, Sarah Palin Rebound, New York Times

It was a different Sarah, no, actually the real Sarah is back!

  • Slaying Salmon July 15, 2014
Home from commercial fishing grounds in Bristol Bay, and here's Piper helping slay salmon to market! A good season for wild reds on the Nushagak, Piper hopes to make enough to cover, maybe, a cell phone bill. Do you agree, as I’ve said before, we need more girls holding up fish in pics instead of holding up iPhones in selfies?!  It’s always wonderful re […]

  • First Leg of the "Good Tidings and Great Joy" Book Tour November 6, 2013
Looking forward to heading out on the first leg of our "Good Tidings and Great Joy" book tour! I wanted to share with you some of the pre-Thanksgiving schedule and details. (More to come!) We look forward to seeing you on the road, having the opportunity to spread the positive message of this book and really share in the true spirit of the Christma […]
  • It Takes a Village... to Slay a Salmon July 3, 2013
The beauty of catching some of our Alaskan species with fins is the amount of meat harvested with each fish. Rod and reeling red salmon, or, my favorite, a big (or even not so big) halibut ensures you've got a few dinners taken care of even when feeding a bunch of people. We had a blast hauling in halibut in Homer a few days ago, despite the cold rain an […]
  • Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of Gettysburg June 30, 2013
Today marks the beginning of the week-long ceremonies commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. There will be a full re-enactment of the battle, discussions with panels of historians, and of course a re-reading of the Gettysburg Address. But as Lincoln affirmed when he dedicated that hallowed ground, nothing we say or do can “add or de […]
  • #SOTUGottaBKiddingMe February 13, 2013
If you missed President Obama’s State of the Union address last night, you didn’t miss much – especially if you watched any of his past four State of the Union addresses. We heard the same recycled rhetoric, and we heard his Orwellian declaration that the cornucopia of new federal programs he proposed, as well as his intention to eradicate world poverty, wou […]
  • New Year's Resolution to Keep the Faith! January 1, 2013
Best wishes to everyone for a happy New Year! In the coming days there will be a great deal of debate about the goings-on in the political arena and the shenanigans in Washington. Constitutional commonsense conservatives must stay engaged and hold our “leaders” accountable to the voice of average everyday hard working Americans or we will very soon become an […]

  • WashPost 'Humorist' (and Ten Friends) Joke About How Chefs Should Mock Sarah Sanders July 23, 2018
Washington Post Magazine humorist Gene Weingarten is only writing one column a week, and now he's out-sourcing it to ten of his liberal friends. Together, they produced the kind of "humor" that comes from people who are still sore that Hillary Clinton isn't president. The concept was this: If the Red Hen restaurant did not kick out Trump […]

  • Colbert's Cartoon Bill Clinton Admits: 'I Should Be in Jail' July 23, 2018
From gags like President Donald Trump being beckoned to the situation room with promises of doughnut crumbs to Vladimir Putin's declaration that the Helsinki Summit was "a vibrant conversation of me telling him exactly what to say and do," Stephen Colbert's animated Showtime series Our Cartoon President, is a sophomoric, ham-handed attemp […]

  • 'Preacher' Blasphemes with Gluttonous, Obese Version of Pope July 23, 2018
AMC’s Preacher is no stranger to controversy obviously, but the worst of the worst usually comes from the original graphic novel. The fact that the show feels confident enough to bring it to screen says more about our society than anything I could type. The latest casualty this week is the Pope.

  • More Mockery from Sacha Baron Cohen: Hitting Cheney With 'Dick Pic' Jokes July 23, 2018
If there was ever any doubt about the intentions of Sacha Baron Cohen’s Who is America?, Sunday night’s episode settles it. Three out of the four segments in tonight’s episode of the Showtime series mocked conservatives while none mocked liberals.

  • NYT Shows No Self-Awareness, Hits Pro-Trump Tabloid for 'Crossing...Line Into Politics' July 23, 2018
The New York Times indulged in some self-owning irony on Sunday’s front page under the byline of Jim Rutenberg and Ben Protess. The subject was American Media Inc., the tabloid company that publishes the National Enquirer: "Federal authorities examining the work President Trump’s former lawyer did to squelch embarrassing stories before the 2016 election […]
